Every Sunday Craig, owner and operator of Restoration Edge Sharpening, has a booth in front of the Post Office at the farmers’ market sharpening knives and garden tools the old-fashioned way on a large stone wheel. Reminiscent of the days of old when outdoor markets had sharpeners, the Los Gatos Farmers’ Market encourages anyone with dull knives or garden tools to stop by and have Craig sharpen them to perfection!
Country Essences Flowers - If it wasn’t for this grower, the Los Gatos Farmer’ Market may never have come about when it did. Linda Arietta, owner of Country Essences Flowers, encouraged two friends to start a farmers’ market in Los Gatos 21 years ago. Arietta grew up in a farming family in Watsonville and has continued the tradition by growing berries and flowers for many years.
Her love of flowers started as a young girl when she would assist her mother preparing bouquets for the local church. Not only did she learn about the different variety of flowers over the years, she learned how color and texture blend to create a memorable flower arrangement.
Arietta started selling at farmers’ markets when there was only a handful operating in the Bay Area. Knowing how wonderful farm fresh food tastes, Arietta approached her good friend, SuEllen Sterling in 1991 and asked her to consider starting a farmers’ market in Los Gatos. Sterling asked her business partner, Mel Defe to join her and a year later it was open for operation.
Arietta’s years of growing and selling at farmers’ markets gave her access to other growers and because of her effort the Los Gatos Farmers’ Market opened with 10 growers on that first August morning in 1992.
Over the years Arietta has become a fixture at the Los Gatos Farmers’ Market. You will often find her at her stand in Los Gatos making bouquets for a client or designing a wedding arrangement for an upcoming wedding. She loves to talk “flowers” and is happy to show you what flowers compliment one another and how to care for them when you get them home.
During the wedding season, Arietta is busy helping brides find the perfect flowers for their special occasion. This is something she loves to do and knows how important it is to the bride that everything blends and compliments the bride’s color scheme. Visit Arietta at her booth in Los Gatos and stop to smell the roses!
